Hot News: Forged Truth publishes ‘The Typewriterists’

Here at Forged Truth, we’re getting very excited. Our first venture into ‘actual publishing’ is drawing ever nearer. October 2024 marks our debut! ‘The Typewriterists‘ by David N Martin will become our first ever publlication. Unlike conventional publishers, we’ve promised ourselves not to allow the one- to two-year wait between our authors completing a novel and us actually publishing it. There are no marketing cycles or pre-release marketing campaigns setting the agenda at Forged Truth. The author produces the work; we publish! We worry about the guerrilla marketing afterwards.

The downside of that enlightened approach is we’re sitting here in the Forged Truth office a few days away from the promised publication date and — guess what? — our author, Mr David N Martin, is still tinkering with the text. OK, not the whole text, but enough of it to make the typesetters nervous. We do have a cover though, and it’s really, really cool. Here it is:

Send us a message and let us know what you think of the visuals.

A few brave people have read it already, so just to whet your appetite, let’s see what two prize-winning authors thought of the uncorrected proofs:

Engaging, thoughtful, realistic…  I loved it”  —  Chris d’Lacey

“An absorbing and stunningly evocative work of fiction” — Jacob Ross

Interesting, right? But what’s the novel about? Here’s what it says on the back cover:

War is over.  The Roaring Twenties have begun.  Eustace Havershall is a decorated hero, not quite acceptable in British society’s upper circles.  His under-funded company manufactures typewriters, a new-fangled technology to revolutionise office work. Virginia is the headstrong black sheep of the aristocratic Buckley family, a rebel against her own privilege.  He is ruthlessly ambitious; she harbours aspirations beyond her gender.  Perfectly mismatched, their turbulent marriage and growing fortune crash in the Depression-era Thirties, but fascism kindles a terrible new conflict, in which the nation’s manufacturing prowess will be everything and the love-scarred Havershalls must play their part.

Make sure you don’t miss the full details when the novel finally gets released later this month (October 2024) by signing up for our blog and email posts below.

  1. I love this.

Great bit of promotion Mr Martin. It all looks very slick and very fabulous. Love the cover design and the way you’ve displayed it. It does look a bit like a thriller though and I think that’s possibly due just to the sans serif typeface. It’s very modern and thrillerish. I love the slightly broken-up inkiness to the title and the name, but for a title like ‘The TypeWriterists’ Shouldn’t the type look a bit more like it was typed on a typewriter?

Wishing you all the best with your excellent novel.

    1. Ah, Terri, there speaks someone who has beta-read bits of the manuscript!! Thanks for the endorsement.
The new marketing team at Forged Truth Publishing had a heated debate both about the cover image and the font for the title. You’re right that the book doesn’t fall into a normal thriller genre, but it does have lots of sweeping scenery and the last act of the story is set during the Battle of Britain and the Blitz, leading up to the German bombing of Coventry (in other words, lots of fire and destruction). We thought it was appropriate. Our alternative cover had Eustace and Virginia standing in front of bombed out buildings, and while I maintain that the book is a love story at heart, it began to look very Mills and Boon, something which the book certainly isn’t. As to the font, well, everything we tried that resembled a typewriter’s output just looked naff, and our digital marketing expert had the casting vote and went for what we have, mainly because it leaps out at you even when it’s scaled down to the little images on an Amazon selling page.
The proof copies are on the way to us at Forged Truth! We can’t wait. Hot news: we are aiming for a publication date of 18th October, so get ready, and start writing ‘The Typewriterists’ on your Christmas list! In fact, write it on everybody’s Christmas list This book has been coming for twenty-five years.
