Kindles- Good or Bad?

I’ve been thinking about the publishing revolution all over again. Is it good that suddenly there’s a huge flood of more information available? Is it even information when so much of it is freely available with no sort of editorial control?

As Carraway once said (In Forged Truth), “The growth in available information produces the illusion of knowledge. Knowledge is power. People feel good about power. Therefore, a growth in available information makes people feel good. On the other hand, a growth in available information only produces real knowledge if all of the information is accurate. Releasing two or more conflicting ‘facts’ prevents an increase in public knowledge, and in some cases, may even destroy knowledge that already exists.

“If you are the only person who knows which facts are correct, the increase in freely available information leads to an increase in your power and reduces other people’s while at the same time making them feel good. This, of course, is the basis of good government.”

  1. The distincton between access to information and the posession of knowledge is a point well made. Didn’t Carraway himself once say ‘All fiction is ultimately autobiography just as all autobiography is fiction’?

No – hold on a moment, I think that was me.
